Dear Reader,

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to connect with a colleague from the Accelerator for Entrepreneurs Organization, a network I joined when I started ResultsLab. It reminded me how incredibly important it was to find the right network to lean on early in my journey to becoming a business owner. I remember times when I thought, “am I doing this right? … should I be doing it differently?” I was constantly searching for the right people or resources to guide me, but I always questioned whether these resources truly provided the information I needed. At a critical point, I realized I needed more than haphazard asks to my personal network or unwieldy searches on the internet. While I learned about creating a website and setting up client contracts, it was not the best way to ensure I was set up for success. I needed a network of individuals who were trying to do what I was doing (building a company from scratch), and who were experiencing similar challenges and successes. I needed a community that was willing to mutually share learnings and experiences and provide insights to drive my thinking. It was a gamechanger.

When I finally found the right group, I was skeptical at first but quickly felt like I was coming home. Other members were articulating the same challenges I was having, and I was able to share my own experiences to contribute to others’ growth. I also had access to a coach who had built their own business beyond where ResultsLab is even today – my coach was such a valuable asset to my business growth and success.

At ResultsLab, we work with leaders of social good organizations who are also seeking support and resources to drive their operations, strengthen programs, secure funding - all to better serve individuals and families in their community. We specialize in working to ensure our partners are creating a culture of learning with a strong impact measurement practice. We’ve heard many times the data and impact professionals are often in a role that is siloed. There may only be one person dedicated to this work, if that, and they have a steep learning curve and limited resources. They often seek resources online, but don’t know how or when to use them. Many of these professionals we’ve spoken to feel isolated – either being a lone wolf in their organization or as a lone wolf consultant contracted to support this work – and need a network of professionals they can explore challenges with and discuss ideas. They need to take their data practice to the next level and are craving a space where they can learn from each other. I’ve been there too. So has my team. It’s an exhausting place to be.

Networks of support are pivotal for professional growth – keep building yours. Think about where you would benefit from getting some support, start laying the groundwork to make it happen. What are your biggest challenges when it comes to measuring social impact?
