Dear Reader

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a hot topic. Many businesses and nonprofits worry if they aren’t using AI, then they’re falling being. But few people are talking about how to use it in an ethical and human-centered way, what are the pitfalls, and what to watch out for. We at ResultsLab are asking the same questions. I joined a session for Denver based businesses to better understand some of the opportunities and challenges.

While the conversation largely focused on ways that organizations can use AI, I wanted to elevate the points made where caution and a human-centered approach is needed.

Here are four things we should all be considering when using AI:

  • Understand AI’s Solution: If AI is making decisions that impact people, then you must be ready to understand and explain how AI came up with the solution. If you can’t, there is legal risk and certainly brings up ethical questions.

  • AI Data Sources and Consent: If the data that your AI is working from is provided by customers or clients, consent may be required legally – and I would add consent should be given from an inclusive data practice lens.

  • AI “Hallucination” and Biases: When AI is making up information or saying non-existing data is real, this coupled with the possibility of discriminatory output, requires great caution. This circles back to the first bullet above regarding the need to be able to understand and explain how AI arrived at a solution.

  • Transparency: Be transparent with clients and customers about how you are using AI. People may opt out at this stage of AI development, and that needs to be respected.

AI will be an inevitable part of our professional and personal lives. Before we begin to embed AI into our work and routines, we must learn how to use it responsibly.

That's why, on August 23, 2023, we're hosting a live virtual session, “Moving Towards Human Centered AI,” with Meena Das, an AI and data expert.

Join us for this event and learn how to build more human centered AI practices in your work.
