Dear Reader,

The past few weeks have been busy and full of learning for our team. We’ve had the opportunity to participate in number of engagements – the Stanford Social Innovation Review Annual Conference (SSIR Institute), the Colorado Inclusive Economy Summit, Denver Startup Week and the Denver ScaleUp Network graduation ceremony. While the theme for the SSIR Institute was specifically designed around “Bridging the Divide,” this topic crosscut through many of the engagements we participated in. It’s one that is top of mind nationally, and globally – a challenge we see within families, communities, organizations and societies at large.

So how can we bridge these divides? Below are three key takeaways we captured throughout these few weeks:
  • Put aside your agenda, and be genuinely curious
Often we focus too much on what we want to communicate - the point we want to make, the idea we want to share, the beliefs we have. We get caught up in our own agenda that we fail to see the full picture.

The author, Mónica Guzmán, spoke at the SSIR Institute and shared that we all should be asking, “what am I missing” and to chase the “I never thought of it that way” moments. This will help you stay curious longer, and open up the possibilities of learning something new or surprising.

  • Listen often, and early
Listen not with the intent to solve, but rather with the intent to understand.

At Denver Startup Week I was on a panel about growth with three other second stage companies in fast growth mode. The conversation centered on what made this growth possible. Among other logistical considerations, the main theme from each panelist was “know your customer.” To grow, you have to provide something of value and solve a problem your customer is having. You can’t get that solution right without listening deeply and consistently, seeking to understand, and acting on what you hear.

  • Use conflict to grow and learn from
Conflict is typically clouded by the pursuit of ego and the perception of being right. Instead, we need to shift our mindset to see conflict as an opportunity for growth and the pursuit of learning.

Professor Priti Pradhan Shah, another speaker at SSIR Institute, shared in her presentation how, “conflict enables us to reimagine the information we have in front of us in ways that we might not have thought of.”
This topic is expansive – and at times overwhelming – but these lessons can help us begin to bridge the divides in our everyday lives.
