Dear Reader,

Recently I spoke at Impact Day for the Entrepreneurs’ Organization of Colorado. I shared why impact was important to me, for my company, and why ResultsLab pursued B Corp certification. After the meeting, a participant asked about our B Corp status and stated, “it’s just not worth it for my company.” Their comment was disconcerting for me. Too often organizations see the certification itself as the goal, instead of why a company would become B Corp certified.

The why for me is less about being able to have the B Corp certification label on our website, and more about how we operate the company on a daily basis. Being B Certified is a reminder to keep asking:

  • Who are we partnering with? How do they operate their businesses? Who owns it and what is the reputation of the parent company? What is their track record with how do they treat their employees? For example, when our company was looking for some photography support, we reach out to our client who supports black women entrepreneurs. She introduced us to someone from her network, who not only had the skills we needed, but the partnership was aligned with our company's commitments and values. While this is the approach we often take when seeking external support and partnerships, there is an opportunity to systematize this approach so we are continuously screening based on a values match.
  • In what ways are our employees being supported by working for us? Are our wages fair and at market rate or higher? What benefits do employees most want? Is employment progression possible? Maintaining a healthy work-life balance for our employees has always been important to our company. Before becoming a certified B Corp we offered flexible working schedules, the ability to work remote, and two 'Out Living It' days for team members to spend time volunteering or taking a mental health break. Since becoming a B Corp, we've also shifted to an unlimited paid time off policy with dedicated sick days. Continuously monitoring what benefits are important to our team is an important practice for our company and to be able to adapt as those needs evolve.
  • Who are our clients? We exclusively service clients whose work is focused on positive community impact. Do we have the right mechanisms in place with our sales team to ensure those are the only clients we sell to? We see our clients as partners in our vision to create a world where everyone thrives. Communicating this regularly to the team and embedding this into our operations, helps the team know which opportunities to say 'yes' to and which ones to say 'no' to.  If an opportunity arises that is not aligned with our model, we are equipped to turn it down. This allows us to solely focus our efforts on the opportunities and projects that are creating a positive impact in our communities.

The purpose of becoming a certified B Corp isn't about achieving a single, momentary goal. It's about being held to a higher standard in a cycle of continuous improvement. It's committing to a process that will build economies that make things better for all the people and the planet.
